Our accessibility standard

Our target is WCAG 2.2 Level AA across every page. This statement sets out what is built in, what we have checked, and the known limitations. It is a statement of our target and our testing, and it is not a claim of conformance.

What is built in

• Every page can be operated by keyboard alone, in a sensible order, with a focus outline you can see on every surface.
• A skip link, so you do not tab through the navigation on every page.
• Text and interface colours meet the AA contrast ratio, and information is never carried by colour alone: the three routes always travel with their name and their icon as well as their colour.
• Text stays readable and usable at 200% zoom.
• The layout reflows down to a 320 pixel screen with no sideways scrolling, so it works on a small phone and on a magnified desktop.
• Buttons, form controls and standalone links are at least 44 pixels tall, with space between them. Links inside a sentence are the height of the text around them.
• Every form field has a real label that stays visible while you type. Nothing uses a placeholder as a label.
• Form errors appear together at the top of the form, each one linking to the field it belongs to, and each one says what to do next. Nothing is validated one field at a time.
• The form asks how you would prefer to be contacted, and whether anything would make contact easier. Both answers are used.
• Animation is kept to state changes only, and it switches off entirely if your device is set to reduce motion.
• Plain language, headings in order, and page titles that say where you are.

The typeface

The body text is set in Atkinson Hyperlegible, drawn by the Braille Institute specifically so that readers with low vision can tell similar letterforms apart: a capital I from a lowercase l, a 0 from an O. It is used here for that reason and not as decoration. Headings use a condensed face that matches the identity; body copy never does.

What we have tested

• Automated accessibility checks against the live pages, not against the source.
• The whole Register Interest form driven by keyboard alone, including the questions that appear once you say how you would like to be involved, and the links in the error summary.
• Contrast ratios calculated from the actual colour values, with a check that fails our build if anyone introduces a combination that does not pass.
• Layout at screen widths from 320 to 1920 pixels, and at 200% browser zoom, inspected as rendered pages.

Known limitations

• The site has not yet had an independent accessibility audit or testing with disabled people. Both come before any claim of conformance.
• Screen reader and browser combinations have not all been tested yet. If yours does something unexpected, tell us which one it is.
• There is no British Sign Language or Easy Read version of this content.
• The form branches using a modern browser feature. On a browser that does not support it, the form shows every question instead of only the relevant ones. It still sends.

Telling us about a barrier

Use the form on this site and choose “I have a general question”. It helps if you can tell us the page, what you were trying to do, and what device, browser or assistive technology you were using, but tell us even if you cannot, because a report we have to chase is still better than a barrier we do not know about.
